Pest business

Make a fortune through fumigation

The devastating effects of pests and insects that can lead to disease, loss of agricultural products and properties were the main reason why the government introduced the use of pesticides and insecticides as an effective means of controlling them, the founder, AnitaRowl Cleaning & Logistics in Lagos State, Anita Emelue entrusted LEADERSHIP.

For example, malaria spreads when a mosquito becomes infected with the disease after biting an infected person, and the infected mosquito then bites an uninfected person, Emelue said, adding that current statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that Nigeria is responsible for around 31.9% of malaria deaths globally, recording 200,000 deaths in 2021.

In terms of agriculture, Emelue said, pests are one of the most important factors that affect the productivity and profitability of agricultural production, which explains the importance of pest control with pesticides.

Fumigation operators are needed everywhere. They are needed by food processing companies, dairy factories, confectioneries, large farms, government and factories dealing with perishables and raw materials.
“Additionally, insecticides and pesticides are used to control deadly insects and pests in factories, offices and even homes, which makes the fumigation business very lucrative in Nigeria,” Emelue said.

To excel in this profession, one must do the following:
To start the business, says Emelue, you need training. “You have to know the right equipment and the right amount of chemicals to use for insect, rodent or pest control. You also need to learn how to protect yourself, as you are dealing with deadly chemicals that can be harmful to your health. You can learn the job from a professional,” she said.

CAC Registration
After that, she said, the next step is to register the business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and then join the Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN).

After registration, she said, it’s time to look for funds, adding that “you need funds to buy the necessary equipment and chemicals. To get started, you just need a fogger machine, a motorized sprayer, and masks and other safety uniforms, among other things. All the machines needed for fumigation cost around N500,000-800,000. However, to get started, you don’t need to buy all the machines at once. You select the ones you need right now.
“After buying the equipment, you can either buy insecticides and pesticides or wait until you have a customer before buying them. But due to how fast the prices of chemicals are increasing day by day, I would advise you to buy the insecticides and pesticides (ie if you have the money).

Business fumigation is skyrocketing, due to referrals, word of mouth and aggressive marketing, like going to schools, factories, offices, etc., Emelue said, adding that “to start, you can also use your social media credentials to market yourself”.

The fumigation business generates huge profits, Emelue said, noting that for her business she can charge up to N60,000 for the fumigation of a duplex and between N150,000 and N300,000 for a place.

The secret of success in business
“You have to learn the trade very well, because the sustainability of your business depends above all on referrals and customer loyalty. Before giving a quote to your customers, make sure to visit the place and find out the latest chemical price.
“You have to be passionate about the job. It may not be easy for beginners, but with determination you will get there. You should treat all of your customers as “VIPs”.
“I have to reiterate the importance of marketing yourself and your business. You need to market yourself, especially through social media. You shouldn’t be ashamed to tell others about your business. your family members, neighbors and people living on your streets. You need to print posters and flyers. You can also send mass SMS to targeted audience who may need your services. Also think about post advertisements on social networks.
“You can also attract customers by hanging banners and large maps on utility poles and road junctions. Once you can afford it, you can also advertise in environmental newspapers and magazines,” she pointed out.
